NEW LONDON, Conn--(Photopraphy Provided by Anika Goodhue) "Twinning is trending at Connecticut College," said Connecticut College Head Women's Soccer Coach Norm Riker who opens the 2014 season with home games on Friday and Sunday of this weekend.
"It's a rare coincidence to have four sets of twins competing in the fall season," Riker added.
The Camel field hockey and women's soccer team share a common thread with two pairs of twins playing on their respective teams.
Returning for their second season on the pitch are sophomores Annie and Cathy Higgins of West Hartford, Conn.
Joining them on the field will be Miche and Nikki Medina of Hartford, Conn.
Meanwhile, on the Silfen Turf Field, recently appointed head field hockey coach Chrissy Needham welcomes Colbi and Berklee Vaillancourt of Manchester, N.H. while Myrta and Cheyanne Asplundh of Huntingdon Valley, Pa. join forces to help the Camels this fall.
Annie was feted as the NESCAC Rookie of the Year, the first Camel to do so in the past decade. She shared the team lead with eight points, scoring two goals while assisting on four others.
Cathy proved to be a gifted playmaker in the midfield who will build on a successful rookie campaign for Connecticut College.
"I believe in twin telepathy," Cathy Higgins said. "I pass the ball and just know that Annie will be there!"
And twice last season the Higgins sisters connected for goals. The most memorable connection proved to be the game winner against Bates College. Annie crossed the ball for Cathy who deposited a header into the back of the netting for the home win with only 25 seconds left on the clock.
This fall, the Higgins sisters will welcome another sibling duo from Northwest Catholic, as Miche and Nikki Medina lace up their cleats for the Camels.
"Miche (Michelle) and I both see and think the same way." Nicky Medina said. "We know what the other is going to do and what will happen next."
The Higgins and Medina's relationship goes back a long way. They first met in middle school while playing premier soccer. All four attended Northwest Catholic High School and together the twins won two soccer championships in the Nutmeg State.
"Cathy would pass the ball to Nicky, Nicky would pass the ball to me, I would pass the ball to Miche, and Miche would score!" said Annie Higgins as she recounted the talented groups championship run.
Now, Camel nation is hoping that the synergy that these two sibling pairs have created will carry on to The Green.
