NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Senior Bregje Smits (Bussum, Netherlands) scored a backhand goal in the second round of the shootout to lift the Manhattanville College Valiants to a 1-0 victory against Connecticut College Wednesday night in New London. Manhattanville College junior net-minder Kaitlin Halloran (Nesconset, N.Y.) made 11 saves, six of them coming in the second half, to help lead the visitors to victory.
The Valiants improved their record to 5-3 while the Camels fell to 0-4.
In the second round of the shootout, junior Jacqueline Murphy (pictured, Danvers, Mass.) provided the hosts with a spark when she put in a backhander for the Camels, but Halloran was able to stop the second Camel attempt, and that's when Smits was able to put the game away with a nifty backhand move to lift the visitors to the victory.
The Camels applied relentless pressure on Halloran and the Manhattanville defense throughout the entire game. With 12:16 remaining in the overtime, sophomore Jamie Navoni (Natick, Mass.) broke free in a one-on-one situation against the keeper but Halloran was able to make a save with her blocker at the near post side of the cage. Just over a minute later, Murphy went upstairs with a wrist shot from the center of the circle but Halloran was able to make the stop for the Valiants.
Early in the second overtime, Murphy had another bid to win the game but Halloran made a game saving stop on the shot with 13:40 remaining.
Connecticut College out-shot the Valiants 22-to-5 in the contest and held a 19-3 edge in peanlty corners.
