NEW LONDON, Conn.--The Connecticut College men's hockey team coasted to a 7-2 NESCAC victory against visiting Colby College Friday night.
The Camels improve their record to 2-4-1 with a 1-3-1 mark in league action. The Mules fall to 1-7 and are 0-5 in the NESCAC.
The hosts scored a pair of shorthanded goals during a four goal second period that saw the Camels build a 6-1 advantage. Senior Sean Murray (Stamford, Conn.), Sebastian Meltzer (Montreal, Quebec) and Zach Jones (Gibsonia, Pa.) all contributed with a goal and an assist for the winning side. Senior Dawson Luke (Wellesley, Mass.) scored his fifth goal of the season while juniors Mike Sinsigalli (Redding, Conn.), Keith Veronesi (South Glastonbury, Conn.) and freshman forward JR LaPointe (Gardner, Mass.) all supplied single tallies for the hosts. Mike Petchonka (Ridgefield, Conn.) made 27 saves in the triumph.
"It was nice to get a NESCAC win in front of our loyal fans," Sean Murray said. "Dawson and I are embracing this being the end. We're just focused on trying to win games right now.
Colby College sophomore Ray Zeek (Wallingford, Conn.) and Jonathan Sdao (Niwot, Colo.) both had goals for the visitors. Matt Delaney (Houston, Texas) finished with 19 saves while sophomore Sam Parker (Cambridge, Mass.) was impressive in relief, recording nine stops in the final two periods of action.
Murray got things started with a goal at 2:12. Later on with 10:35 remaining in the first, Murray delivered a lead pass to Meltzer who flicked one in from his backhand to make it a 2-0 game. But Zeek halved the lead with 3:56 to go, rifling one home from below the left circle as he was being checked to the ice and the Camels had a 2-1 lead after one.
In the second period, the Camels took control. JC Cangelosi (Estero, Fla.) assisted Luke for a goal 1:58 into the frame. Later on with 12:17 remaining in a shorthanded situation, Kevin Reich (Montvale, N.J.) chopped the puck out to center ice for Sinsigalli, who went in alone and snuck one through the five hole of Delaney to make it a 4-1 game.
With 6:45 remaining, the Camels added another shorty. Delaney was trying to clear the puck but Jones was able to steal the puck away and execute on a nifty looking wrap around move to make it a 5-1 game. With 3:48 left in the second, the Camels took a 6-1 lead when Mike Martinez (Orchard Park, N.Y.) led LaPointe in for 1-on-1 situation and the freshman buried a low wrist shot at the near post side of the goal.
Colby got one back on their power play when Sdao scored with 2:09 left. But Veronesi tacked on the seventh goal, his fifth of the season, 56 seconds into the third period with assists coming from Marc Roper (Moncton, New Brunswick) and Adam Patel (Alpharetta, Ga.).
Connecticut College out-shot Colby 35-to-29.
Colby visits Tufts Saturday for a 4:15 p.m. game in Malden, Mass. The Camels will take on Bowdoin for a 3:00 p.m. game in New London.
