Salem, Mass.--(Salem State University, Joseph Beitz) Eric Defelice (Chalfont, Pa.) scored 2:33 in overtime to lift Salem State University past the Camels of Connecticut College 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Rockett Arena. The Vikings improve to 4-3 on the year while Connecticut College remains winless at 0-6.
The Camels had a 2-on-1 break in the extra session, but were stonewalled by Salem State goalie Ryan Sutliffe (Las Vegas, Nev.). Andrew Bucci (Peabody, Mass.) then set up Defelice for his third goal of the season and first game-winner.
The first period was a back–and–forth defensive struggle with three power plays for Connecticut College, including a 5-3, and one for Salem State. The Camels' goaltender Mike Petchonka (Ridgefield, Conn.) saw six shots, but stood firm in net as the teams would end the period 0-0.
Both teams continued with their defensive prowess in the second as the game would remain scoreless. The Vikings had a late flurry of shots that included a scrum in front of the net, but they were unable to capitalize.
The Camels missed an opportunity in the third to score, but goaltender Sutliffe made an amazing save with his glove to snag the puck out of mid-air. Connecticut College failed on two power play chances and the game remained 0-0 heading into overtime.
Both teams combined to go 0-for-10 on the power play with the Camels going 0-for-6. Salem State's Sutliffe had 21 saves while Petchonka stopped 26 shots for Connecticut College.
The Vikings' next game will be against Colby or Wentworth in Babson Park, MA. The Camels take to the ice on Tuesday at 7:00 PM at Manhattanville.
