NEW LONDON, Conn. – Freshman Augie Djerdjaj (Mahopac, N.Y.) netted two insurance goals in his collegiate debut to help propel the Connecticut College men's soccer team to a convincing 5-0 victory over Mitchell College in its season opener on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Connecticut College (1-0) opened the scoring in the 14th minute when junior Matt Butera (Westfield, Mass.) and senior Tyler Hoadley (South Kent, Conn.) found senior Christian Murphy (Newport News, Va.) on the left wing. The junior rifled a shot past a diving Seth Strader to put the Camels on the board.
After Hoadley connected with junior Manny Balbontin (New York, N.Y.) to double the margin shortly before the half, the visitors came out firing again and needed just 2:08 to make it 3-0 in the early stages of the second frame and seize control. Murphy factored into a marker for the second time on a corner kick by sending in a cross that was headed home by Liam Donelan (Milton, Mass.), and Djerdjaj then put the match away by scoring twice in a span of 5:30 during the 63rd and 69th minutes of action.
Sophomore AJ Marcucci (West Chester, Pa.), who was named the 2017 NESCAC Rookie of the Year, and classmate Chris MacKay (Riverside, Calif.) teamed up for the shutout between the pipes. They each played a half and stopped one Mariner shot on target. Strader of Mitchell (0-2) suffered the defeat despite making nine saves.
Connecticut College returns to action when it hosts Middlebury on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 2 p.m.
