HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C—(Patrick Farrell) The Camels battled late into Thursday night with their opponents East Texas Baptist University. A pushed back start time to around 7 o'clock led towards a long night of tennis in sub 40 degree temperatures.
At #1 singles, Charlie Williams showed control over his opponent the entire match, as he coasted to a 6-2, 6-3 victory. At #2, #3, and #5 Daniel Maffa, Will Cannon, and Scott Brown respectively came back to win second sets and push their opponents into super tie-breakers. Cannon pulled through with a 2-6, 6-3, 10-7 win and Scott Brown fell in the tie-breaker 10-8. As the clock hit 10pm, the court lights went out, and we were forced to change match sites to a different location that would keep the lights on. Maffa carried his match over to the new site, but eventually fell in the tie-breaker 10-6. Ben Sachs finished up his match with a score of 6-2, 7-5, after coming back from a 5-2 deficit in the second set.
The score was now tied at 4-4, with the match in Johnny Cissel's hands at #6. Cissel was up 6-2, 4-1 when 11pm hit, and the lights again turned off. The match was forced to end unfinished. This was a long night of fighting on the courts with difficult conditions. The men showed poise and the ability to battle during every match.
