Connecticut College 6 Hamilton College 3 Dan’s the Man: Maffa Leads Camels in Final Conference Match

NEW LONDON, Conn.--Senior Daniel Maffa (Lexington, Mass.) gutted out a victory at second singles to lead the Connecticut College men's tennis team in a 6-3 triumph against Hamilton College on the South Tennis Courts here in the Whaling City today.

Maffa erased a 1-0 deficit, taking a 6-4 triumph in the second set. In the super tie-breaker Maffa pulled through in an epic battle with Hamilton freshman Sam Farber (Livingston, N.J.), gutting out a 12-10 win.  Earlier in the day, Maffa joined forces with sophomore Will Cannon (Fairfield, Conn.) in taking an 8-2 victory for the Camels at number one doubles. 

The Camels improved their record to 6-9 with the victory and are 1-6 in conference play. The will close out the season tomorrow with a 2:00 p.m. match against the Bombers from Ithaca College. Maffa and Will Kadison (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) will be honored on Senior Sunday here in the Whaling City. The Continentals wrap up their season with a record of 5-14 (0-7 NESCAC).

Connecticut College sophomore Charlie Williams (Mercer Island, Wash.) cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 straight set win at number one singles today. Sophomore Scott Brown (Old Greenwich, Conn.) chipped in with a 6-0, 7-6 victory at fifth singles for the Camels. Junior Ben Sachs (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) and Williams notched an 8-3 victory at second doubles. Sophomore Johnny Cissel (Amherst, N.H.) and Camel junior captain Patrick Farrell (Smithtown, N.Y.) secured a 9-7 win at third doubles for the hosts. 

Hamilton College senior Burke Paxton (Yarmouth, Maine) ended his career on a high note, coming away with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory at third singles for the visitors. Classmate Jon Cohen (New York, N.Y.) finished up with a win as well, holding off Sachs by taking a 10-6 decision in the super tie-breaker at fourth singles.  Sophomore Matthew Haas (Scotch Plains, N.J.) earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory at sixth singles for the Continentals.
