CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Seniors Stephan Cress (Rockford, Mich.) and Dylan Pinckert (Long Beach, Calif.) each factored into four goals to help lead the Connecticut College men's water polo team to a 12-9 victory over Penn State Behrend in the third-place game at the CWPA Division III Championships on Sunday morning.
Connecticut College's third-place finish at the tournament was one of its best ever, as the program had only finished higher than fourth twice over the last 17 seasons.
Penn State Behrend jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Camels rallied by scoring three unanswered at the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second. Cress put the team on the board at the 3:36 mark before Pinckert tied the score with 20 seconds remaining. Pinckert then found Cress to make it 3-2 with 6:37 left in the second, and the Camels never trailed the rest of the way.
Cress later broke a 4-4 tie and sparked a 4-0 run by finding the back of the net with 3:26 left in the second, while junior Jake Smith (Baltimore, Md.) and sophomores Sean King (La Canada, Calif.) and Arturo Freitas (Weston, Fla.) each scored a pair of insurance markers to allow Connecticut College to earn the three-goal victory.
In addition to Cress and Pinckert, the Camels got another strong outing from netminder Tanner Michaelis (Ramona, Calif.). The freshman made eight saves to finish with 19 over three games. Pinckert also made the all-tournament team after contributing six goals, two assists and two steals.
"Both of our goalkeepers were excellent this weekend, and our two-meter game was also fantastic," said head coach Matt Anderson. "Third place for us at this tournament is something we can all feel good about. Our progress with nine players has been outstanding this season."
Connecticut College (5-10) returns home to host CWPA Mid-Atlantic Division league games next weekend. The Camels will first face Washington & Jefferson on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 11:30 a.m. before facing Gannon later in the day at 6:00 p.m. Seniors Jake Pescatore (New Haven, Conn.), Matthew Wagman (Atlanta, Ga.), Cress and Pinckert will be recognized for their contributions to the program prior to the evening match.
