Women's Varsity Four Boat Wins Gold Medal at New England Championship

WORCESTER, Mass.--The Connecticut College Women's Varsity Four won the New England Rowing Championships Saturday on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Massachusetts. 

Rowing in the Grand Final of the event the crew bested the field of Bowdoin College, UMass-Lowell, Merrimack College, Bryant University, and Clark University.  Connecticut College, who raced in Lane one on the course, nearly missed Bowdoin College's challenge from Lane six in the final 300 meters of the course.  Senior Captain Coxswain Sophie Sharps made a critical call to the crew with 30 strokes of the race remaining edging Bowdoin at the finish line with a time of 7:56.66 to Bowdoin's 7:57.38. 

The crew consisted of Senior Captain Natalie Calhoun at the stroke seat,  Sophomore Maddy Fenderson in the three seat,  Senior Charlotte Hecht in the two seat and Junior Meg Murray in the bow seat.  Connecticut College won the event previously in 2011 and 2006.  

In other events, the Men's Varsity Four finished third in the Petite Final,  the Women's Second Varsity Four finished Fourth in the Grand Final, the Novice Women's Four won the Petite Final and the Women's Novice Eight finished Sixth in the Grand Final out of seven.
