WORCESTER, Mass. – The Connecticut College women's rowing program raced in the National Invitational Championships Championships at Lake Quinsigamond on Friday.
After finishing seventh in their opening heat with a time of 7:14.185, junior coxswain Joyce Welch (Cranston, R.I.) led the varsity eight boat to victory in the fourth finals in a school-record time 7:02.263 on the course. The group also included seniors Maddy Fenderson (Falmouth, Maine) and Camden Cone (Gardiner, Maine) as well as sophomore Emma Gutheinz (Camden, Maine), sophomore Jessica Hunnewell (Sherborn, Mass.), junior Gavriella King (Raymond, Maine), sophomore Hope Murphy (Lake Oswego, Ore.), sophomore Shelby Purdum (Grand Rapids, Minn.) and junior Martha Willey (New York, N.Y.).
Connecticut College won five races this spring and also registered a 12th-place finish among 28 schools at the New England Championships. The program graduates two seniors and is slated to return more than 20 letterwinners next year.
