Drljaca Leads Camels to Sunshine State Sweep on Opening Day of Action

MELBOURNE, Fla.--The Connecticut College women's tennis team opened the season with a pair of victories in Florida Monday.

In the early match, the Camels cruised past Roger Williams in a 7-2 victory. Later on in the day, the Camels defeated St. Thomas Aquinas, 6-3.

The Camels took five of six single matchups in the victory against the RWU Hawks.  Freshman Aleksandra Drljaca (East Greenwich, R.I.) triumphed in a convincing 6-0, 6-0 blanking at first singles.  Junior Charlotte Marcoux (Sudbury, Mass.) earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory of her own at second singles. Adrienne Sieverding (Red Hook, N.Y.) secured a 6-0, 6-1 win at third singles.

Angelica Warren (McLeansville, N.C.) posted a 6-2, 6-0 win at fourth singles. Sophomore Susanna Studwell (pictured, Tucson, Ariz.) notched a 6-3, 6-3 victory at sixth singles for the Camels.

Marcoux and Warren secured an 8-3 victory at second doubles for Connecticut College.

Ali Stankiewicz (Brunswick, Maine) earned a victory at fifth singles for Roger Williams, holding off her opponent in the super tie-breaker with a 10-4 triumph. Junior Lauren Schmidt (South Windsor, Conn.) and Julia Ackerman (Greenwich, Conn.) joined forces in an 8-5 victory at first doubles for the Hawks.

Drljaca paved the way to the victory against the Spartans from St. Thomas Aquinas.  She posted her second 6-0, 6-0 shutout victory at first singles.  Freshman Emily White (Buxton, Maine) earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at third singles. Studwell cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 victory at fourth singles. Sophomore Gibson Miller (Canton, Ohio) added a 6-1, 6-1 victory at sixth singles.

Marcoux and Warren held off their opponents in an 8-6 win at first doubles.  Jillian Brigandi (Harrington Park, N.J.) and Aneeka Kalia (Southborough, Mass.) notched an 8-1 win at third doubles for the Camels.

Sophomore Bianca Signore (Staten Island, N.Y.) rallied for a victory at second singles for the Spartans, posting a 10-7 win in the super tie-breaker.  Freshman Carolyn Kopf (Garnerville, N.Y.) posted a comeback victory at fifth singles, winning a 10-8 decision in the super tie-breaker. Sophomores Raven DeLeon (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Shannon Biehle (Tomkins Cove, N.Y.) earned an 8-5 win at second doubles for St. Thomas Aquinas.
