Byrne Posts Program’s 3rd Fastest Time in Steeplechase-Qualifies for NE D. 3 Champ

NEW LONDON, Conn.--The Connecticut College women's track and field team competed in the Coast Guard Invitational Saturday.

The Camels placed eighth in the 12 team field with a score of 56 points.

Senior Merry Byrne (Brookside, N.J.) provided the major highlight of the day with her third place time of 12:02.13 in the 3000 meter steeplechase. The finish qualified Byrne for the New England Division III Championship and moved her up to third place on the program's all-time performance list.

Joining Byrne in the same event will be senior NESCAC All-Academic team honoree Maura Hallisey (Wethersfield, Conn.), who finished fourth in 12:04.42. Emily Winter (Easton, Conn.) qualified for the New England Division III Championship in the same event with a time of 12:12.65 and fifth place scoring for the Camels. 

Senior Sarah Matthews (Westwood, Mass.) had her ticket stamped for both the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and New England Division III Championships with her fifth place time of 26.32 seconds in the 200 meter dash.

In the 5000 meter run, junior Sarah Huckins (Henniker, N.H.) posted a winning time of 19:24.82 for Camel Nation. Nicole Adam (Cheshire, Conn.) took third place in the same event with a time of 19:29.19 for the Camels.
