Mensah Shatters School Record in the Shot Put for Camels
SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--The Connecticut College women's track and field team opened the season at Springfield College today.
 
Koko Mensah (Orange, N.J.) provided the major highlight of the day, shattering a school record in the shot put with a throw of 39 feet, three and one quarter of an inch. Mensah bested the previous record of 37 feet, 11 inches set by Lauren Kennedy (East Longmeadow, Mass.). Kennedy finished second behind Mensah today with a throw of 37 feet, eight inches. Both Camels earned invitations to the New England Division III Championship with their performances.
 
In the 3000 meters, recent NCAA Cross Country Championship participants Bella Franz (pictured, Water Mill, N.Y.) and Ashley Curran (Franklin, Mass.) finished first and second with times of 10:19.60 and 10:28.66 to earn their invitation to the New England Division III Championship.  Franz also had her ticket stamped for the upcoming All-New England (Division 1, 2 and 3) Championship with her performance. Caitlin Teare (Yarmouth, Maine), Hannah Noyes (Vinalhaven, Maine) and Eva Brydson (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) placed sixth, seventh and eighth in the 3000 with times of 11:27.71, 11:29.17 and 11:30.80.
 

In the triple jump, Camel rookie Taryn Gangi (Methuen, Mass.) covered a distance of 34 feet, seven and one half of an inch en route to another Camel victory. In the 60 meter dash, Gangi placed third with a spring of 8.15 seconds. She qualified for the New England Division III Championship in the two aforementioned events.

Sophomore Emily Senatore (Norwell, Mass.) finished sixth in the weight throw with a mark of 36 feet, three inches. Kaitlin Thomas (Orange, Conn.) placed eighth in the long jump (14 feet, 4 inches). In the pole vault, senior Amanda Jacobsen (Stafford Springs, Conn.) finished fifth for the Camels with a mark of eight feet, six and one quarter of an inch. Sophomore Shannon Kennedy (East Longmeadow, Mass.) took third place in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.97 seconds.
 
Senior Ashley Bjorkman (Mansfield, Mass.) posted a time of 1:26.13 en route to her fourth place finish in the 500 meter dash. In the 200 meter dash, Alicia Palmer  (Bloomfield, Conn.) and Ivana Lamptey (Leicester, Mass.) finished third and sixth with respective times of 27.71 and 28.26 seconds.
