Camels Set Program Record with Ninth Place Finish at New England Division III Championship

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--The Connecticut College women's track and field team scored 21 points to finish in a ninth place tie with Bowdoin College at the New England Division III Championship that was hosted by MIT today. 

The ninth place showing was the best finish for the Camels in their program history at this Championship. Lauren Kennedy (East Longmeadow, Mass.) placed second in the shot put with a throw of 41 feet, 10 and one half inches. Koko Mensah (Orange, N.J.) placed third for the Camels in the shot put, earning a spot in next week's All-New England Championship with a mark of 41 feet, one and three quarter inches.

Senior Bella Franz (Water Mill, N.Y.) posted a time of 2:15.74 to finish third in the 800 meter run. Sophomore Shannon Kennedy (East Longmeadow, Mass.) set a school record in the pentathlon, placing eighth with a score of 2,918 points. Kennedy catapulted all the way up to 33rd place on the national performance list with her score. In one of her five events, Kennedy set another school record in the long jump, with a mark of 16 feet, 10 and one half inches for the Camels. 

All four of these Camels earned All-New England Division III honors for placing in the top eight of their events today.

The Camels finished ninth in two relays today. In the 4x200 meter relay, Ivana Lamptey (Leicester, Mass.), Leila Alfaro (Charleston, S.C.), Shannon Kennedy and Kaitlin Thomas (Orange, Conn.) posted a season-best time of 1:50.70.  Caitlin Teare (Yarmouth, Maine), Hannah Noyes (Vinalhaven, Maine), Anna Guay (Watertown, Conn.) and Franz finished the 4x800 meter relay with a season's best time of 9:53.64. 

In the 3,000 meters, senior Ashley Curran (Franklin, Mass.) posted a time of 10:29.42. The 4x400 meter relay team comprised of Ashley Bjorkman (Mansfield, Mass.), Alfaro, Shannon Kennedy and Lamptey posted a time of 4:14.68 today. In the distance medley relay, Steph Van Riet (Dover, Mass.), Olivia Vener (Marblehead, Mass.), Elizabeth Hensley (Northport, N.Y.) and Micaela Nee (Hanover, Mass.) posted a time of 13:38.04.
