Women’s Water Polo Drowns Utica for Third Time This Season

Stephania Lopez

UTICA, N.Y. – Sophomore captain Stephania Lopez (Chicago, Ill.) scored six goals to help lead the Connecticut College women's water polo team to a 10-6 road victory over Utica on Friday afternoon.

After freshman Marissa Moreno (San Diego, Calif.) put the Camels on the board with 6:43 on the clock in the opening quarter, Lopez recorded a natural hat trick to build the team's lead up to 4-1 and tallied another with 53 seconds remaining to put the Camels ahead, 6-1, through eight minutes of action.

Even though the offense scored only one goal in the second and third frames combined, junior captain Ginny McCool (Delray Beach, Fla.) came through defensively between the pipes to help keep the Camels in front. Utica came within two when Lara McNamara found the back of the net to make it 7-5 early in the fourth, but the visitors recovered by ending the game on a 3-1 run. Freshman Ali Keenan netted her first goal with 26 seconds left to seal the final outcome.

Lopez scored six times by lighting up for four goals in the first quarter and two more in the fourth for the Camels, who defeated the Comets for the third time this season. Moreno added two goals, while McCool picked up the win in the cage.

Connecticut College (7-7) will host the CWPA Division III Championships next weekend and enter the tournament as the fourth overall seed. The Camels are slated to begin postseason play when they host Monmouth on Friday at 4:45 p.m.
