NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Senior captain Jamie Navoni (Northborough, Mass.) factored into a pair of goals to help lead the Connecticut College field hockey team to a 3-2 road win on Wednesday evening.
After a tightly-contested beginning to the first half, the teams traded three goals in a span of 7:45 and shortly before the break. Navoni recorded an unassisted marker in the 21st minute, and sophomore Caroline Ferro (Wilton, Conn.) finished a pass from senior captain Enya McGarry (Woodstock, Md.) to break a tie and give the Camels a 2-1 lead at halftime.
In the second frame, the visitors doubled their lead in the 47th minute when Navoni found freshman Meghan Gazard (Ashland, Mass.) on the left side of the cage. The freshman lifted the ball over goalie Channy Cornell for her first career marker at 46:19 to put the Camels ahead by two goals.
Smith attempted to rally and sliced the deficit in half on a penalty stroke taken by Sammie Pavlov in the 54th minute, but the Pioneers would not be able to come any closer. Freshman netminder Jackie Mountford (Sherborn, Mass.) made three saves down the stretch, which allowed the Camels to hang on for the win.
Mountford picked up her first win as a collegian by going the distance and making eight saves for Connecticut College. Cornell suffered the loss after redirecting five shots.
Connecticut College (1-2) returns home to host Worcester State on Saturday at noon.
