NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College field hockey team dropped a close NESCAC match to No. 13 Williams by a 1-0 score on Saturday afternoon at Silfen Field.
Williams (6-1, NESCAC 4-1) scored the only goal it would need in the 22nd minute when Libby Dolan took a pass from Claire Fitzpatrick and slipped it into the far corner of the cage. The Camels put three shots on target, but netminder Emma Santucci was able to turn them all away to keep the visitors ahead by a goal at the break.
The Ephs came out much stronger in the second half and had a lopsided advantage in total shots. Meredith Wright had a golden opportunity to double the margin in the 64th minute and possibly put the game away, but her attempt on a penalty stroke was denied by freshman goalkeeper Jackie Mountford (Sherborn, Mass.). The Camels were unable to even the score despite applying pressure on the other end over the last few minutes, and Williams was able to hang on to win its fourth conference match of the season.
Santucci picked up the win for Williams by turning away three shots in the first half when the game was also decided. Mountford was charged with the loss for the Camels after making nine saves.
Connecticut College (2-7, NESCAC 0-5), which honored its five-member senior class prior to the match, will next host Amherst on Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m.
