WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman Abby Marchand (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) recorded a hat trick in leading the Connecticut College field hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Worcester State at Coughlin Field on Monday afternoon.
In a game that was rescheduled to the afternoon hours due to EEE precautions, the Camels got on the board first and never trailed at any point of the contest. Marchand caged her first goal as a collegian by taking a pass from sophomore Meghan Gazard (Ashland, Mass.) and firing the ball home from the top of the arc in the sixth minute of play. Shortly after halftime, the freshman doubled the Camel advantage by finishing a feed from senior captain Hannah Falvey (Hingham, Mass.) just 50 seconds into the third quarter.
Worcester State answered back and sliced the deficit in half when Coley Hayes scored in the 34th minute, but that was as close as the Lancers could come. Gazard scored just 5:06 later to give the Camels their two-goal lead back, and Marchand completed her hat trick in the waning minutes with classmate Kerri Maron (Sudbury, Mass.) providing her first career assist on the play.
Junior Meghan Murray (Burlington, Mass.), who was making her first career appearance between the posts for Connecticut College, racked up 12 saves to pick up the victory. Jess Hopkins turned away five shots in the losing effort for Worcester State, which was upended despite holding a 13-11 advantage in total shots and had a 4-3 edge in penalty corner chances.
Connecticut College (2-4) will remain on the road to next face top-ranked and unbeaten Middlebury on Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m.
