Chrissy Needham Chappell is entering her sixth season as the head field hockey coach at Connecticut College in 2019. She joined the Camels after serving as the head coach at Kenyon College and American International College.

Needham has mentored 10 all-conference and 10 NFHCA All-Region honorees, including one defensive player of the year and one goalkeeper of the year, in her nine seasons as a collegiate head coach. In recent seasons, Jackie Murphy ’18 made the NFHCA All-Region Second Team, the All-NESCAC Second Team and was named the MVP of the NFHCA Division III Senior Game in Louisville in 2017, and Jamie Navoni ’19 was a 2018 NFHCA All-Region Second Team and Division III Senior Game selection.

Off the field, Needham’s squads have earned the NFHCA Team Academic Award every year and have also produced numerous individual student-athletes who have been named to the NFHCA and NESCAC All-Academic Team for their efforts in the classroom. Sixteen of the 19 individuals from the 2018 program earned a place on the NFHCA All-Academic Squad, seven made the NESCAC All-Academic Team, and every student-athlete achieved a GPA of a 3.0 or better during the 2019 spring semester.

Before becoming a head coach at the collegiate level, Needham served as an assistant at the University of Massachusetts. During this time, she helped the Minutewomen advance to the NCAA Division I Tournament twice.

A native of Killingworth, Connecticut, Needham was a three-time Big East Conference champion and played in two NCAA Division I Final Fours as a student-athlete at the University of Connecticut. She was also a four-time Big East Academic All-Star and an NFHCA All-Academic selection.

After graduation, Needham taught mathematics and coached field hockey at Greenwich High School. As a coach on the scholastic level, her clubs boasted a 42-3 record over a two-year span while also winning Connecticut’s CIAC Class L state championship twice in 2005 and 2006. She was also recognized as the CIAC Coach of the Year.

Needham earned a bachelor’s degree in education with a concentration in mathematics from the University of Connecticut in 2000 and a master’s in education at the same institution in 2001. She holds a United States Field Hockey Level II Coaching Certificate and is also a graduate of the NCAA Women’s Coaches Academy.
