SALEM, W.V. – Freshman Danny Meisel (Santa Cruz, Calif.) turned away 14 shots and six different players found the back of the net as the Connecticut College men's water polo team triumphed by a 10-8 score in a conference match against McKendree on Sunday morning at Salem International University.
The Camels utilized a balanced scoring attack right from the start, as four players each netted a goal to give the team a 4-0 advantage. McKendree attempted to rally and tied the game up twice at 4-4 and 7-7, but in each instance, Connecticut College was able to respond and never surrendered the lead at any point. Arturo Freitas scored the eventual game-winning marker with 3:05 remaining, and the Camels held on for a two-goal win.
Freshman Mike Gertsik (Brooklyn, N.Y.) paced the offense by registering a hat trick, which included scoring the go-ahead goal to break the 7-7 deadlock in the second half. Meisel made 14 stops between the posts.
Connecticut College (2-7, MAWPC 2-1) has the upcoming week off and will next trek to Pomona, Calif. For the Gary Troyer Invitational beginning on Friday, Oct. 5.
