NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's water polo team closed out weekend CWPA action at home with a 25-12 loss to McKendree on Sunday morning.
The Bearcats controlled play from start to finish, building up a 5-1 lead in the early going and an 8-3 advantage by the end of the first quarter. The margin ballooned to twin figures in the second quarter, and the visitors carried a 14-4 advantage into the break. Adrian Maher and Joseph Manan had four goals apiece through 16 minutes of play.
Connecticut College opened the scoring in the second half on a Christian Jacobsen strike with 7:35 on the clock, but McKendree responded with a 6-1 run to grow the margin to a game-high 14 goals at 20-6 by the end of the third. The Camels were able to outscore the Bearcats in the fourth, 6-5, even though the game was out of reach.
Senior Arturo Freitas (Weston, Fla.) and Jacobsen each recorded a hat trick for Connecticut College, while junior Tanner Michaelis (Ramona, Calif.) made several saves between the posts over the full 32 minutes.
Connecticut College (3-7, CWPA 2-4) will next head to Bridgeville, Pa. to compete at the CWPA Division III Championships beginning on Saturday, Oct. 26. Seeding and opponents will be determined at a later date.
