NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College coed sailing program won the Staake Team Race to qualify for the upcoming New England Team Championships over the weekend.
Led by skippers Carter Pemberton (Osterville, Mass.), Tommy Whittemore (West Hartford, Conn.), CJ McKenna (Harwich, Mass.), and Gordon Gurnell (Old Saybrook, Conn.), the Camels registered a 15-5 record to edge out the University of Rhode Island for the crown. Crew members Cecilia Moreira (Winthrop, Mass.), Paige Dunlevy (San Francisco, Calif.), Walter Henry (Syosset, N.Y.), and Katie Rodger (Marblehead, Mass.) also played an instrumental role in helping the team finish ahead of the Rams as well as Coast Guard, Vermont, Northeastern, and Salve Regina to advance to the New England Team Championships which will be hosted by Connecticut College beginning on Saturday, Apr. 6.
In addition, the women's sailing program raced at nearby Coast Guard for the Vietor Trophy. The Camels entered two groups which finished sixth and eighth among 18 boats with the top-performing group coming out of the A Division. Will Bedford (Arlington, Mass.) and Alex Wagner (Southport, N.Y.) sailed 13 rounds and Will O'Leary (North Salem, N.Y.) and Charlotte Williams (Cambridge, Mass.) competed in five for a boat which finished fourth among 18 with 84 points in their division.
Connecticut College will next send its coed team to MIT for the Marchiando Team Race and the women's program to Harvard for the Central 3 Series next weekend on Saturday, March 30 and Sunday, March 31.
