NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior captain Elena Gualtieri (Rome, N.Y.) factored into three goals as the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team routed Salve Regina by a 6-0 decision on Tuesday evening at Dayton Arena.
Gualtieri factored into the team's first three goals in a span of just 2:42. She opened the scoring on the Camels' first power play of the game at the 13:16 mark of the first period and then doubled the margin just 2:02 later. Sophomore Mairi Anthony (Stoneham, Mass.) then netted her first goal of the season with just over four minutes remaining with junior Lauren Helm (Frisco, Texas) and Gualtieri assisting on the play.
Connecticut College (3-0-1), which carried a 4-0 lead after the first period by also having freshman Catherine Lawrence (Guilford, Conn.) net her first career marker, tallied two more goals in the second period. Senior Jordan Cross (Saugus, Mass.) and freshman Natalie Witkowski (Cheshire, Conn.) each found the back of the net at 8:14 and 15:56, respectively, to close out the scoring.
Freshman Carly Denora (Verona, N.J.) and junior Courtney Peyko (Grand Isle, Vt.) combined for the shutout with the switch coming at the midway point of the second period. Denora made five saves before being relieved by Peyko, who turned away nine shots in her collegiate debut. Gretchen Howard of Salve Regina (1-8-1) stopped 36 shots in the setback.
Connecticut College will next host No. 5 Middlebury for a two-game series this weekend. The first game is scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m.
