NEW LONDON, Conn. – Jane Morrisette tallied two goals in the second period as UMass Boston downed the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team by a 3-0 score on Tuesday evening at Dayton Arena.
Lauren Helm (Frisco, Texas) almost put the Camels on the board first in the opening minutes of the contest. The junior charged down the left boards and came in against goaltender Caty Flagg, but her lifted shot hit off the inside post and ricocheted away. Connecticut College held a slight 5-4 advantage in shots, and the teams headed into the first intermission deadlocked at 0-0.
UMass Boston (9-11-2), however, scored twice in a span of 4:11 in the second period with Morrisette doing the damage. As a Beacon power play was ending, Cailey Kozich found Morrisette in the high slot for a hard shot that made its way past freshman goalie Carly Denora (Venora, N.J.) to put the visitors on the board at 9:12. Less than five minutes later, Kelsey Ryan stole the puck on a strong forecheck and backhanded a pass that was finished by Morrisette again.
The Camels played a stronger third period by outshooting their opponent by a 12-6 margin, but the team unfortunately had nothing to show for it. Flagg turned away all 12 shots she saw, and Kozich added an insurance marker by one-timing a pass from Elie Fallieras. Kaleigh Beauregard, who started the play in transition, was also credited with a helper to close out the scoring.
Flagg picked up the shutout victory by turning away 22 shots for UMass Boston, while Denora was charged with the loss after making 14 saves.
Connecticut College (8-7-2) will continue its homestand when it hosts Colby on Friday night at 7 p.m.
