Gualtieri Shoots Women’s Ice Hockey Past Bowdoin in Overtime Thriller

Elena Gualtieri

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Senior captain Elena Gualtieri (Rome, N.Y.) broke a scoreless deadlock in the 62nd minute of action to propel the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team to a thrilling 1-0 overtime triumph over Bowdoin on Friday evening.

The Camels earned the sudden victory at the 1:31 mark of the extra session shortly after a face off that was won by junior Kylie Wilkes (Howell, N.J.). The center kicked the puck to Gualtieri, who shot home a diving one-timer past Polar Bear netminder Kerri St. Denis to give Connecticut College the sudden victory.

Bowdoin (3-17-1, NESCAC 2-11) took control of the game in the opening period, outshooting the guests by a lopsided 12-3 margin. Senior goalie Bailey Mertz (Glenville, N.Y.), however, turned everything aside.

In the second and third periods, Connecticut College came alive and had the upper hand in shots during both frames. Gualtieri had an excellent chance to put the Camels on the board in the second, but her shot at the right post was blocked by St. Denis' left skate. Junior Sammi Estes (Millis, Mass.) had a shot clink off the right post, and St. Denis made a key stop off a Gualtieri attempt with the Camels on a power play in the final minutes of regulation. But after misfiring on several chances, the team captain capitalized on her 11th shot attempt of the game to lift the Camels into a three-way tie for fourth place in the conference standings.

Mertz picked up her third shutout victory of the season by making 28 saves for Connecticut College. St. Denis of Bowdoin made 30 stops in the losing effort.

Connecticut College (10-8-2, NESCAC 6-5-2) will look to sweep the weekend series against the Polar Bears when the teams meet again tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
