Kempainen Honored as D3 First Team All-American for Connecticut College

NEW LONDON, Conn.--Connecticut College senior central midfielder Astrid Kempainen has been honored as a First Team All-American for Connecticut College.

Kempainen was named as a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Continental Tire First Team All-American in December.

Norm Riker, the 2014 NESCAC and NSCAA New England Region Coach of the Year was pleased to learn of the recognition for Kempainen by

"The D3 Soccer staff does an incredible job covering the season with scores, open polling, and live links from games across the entire country," Riker said.  "Astrid's selection to the D3's First team All-American squad is tremendous and yet another validation of her incredible season.  A grassroots vote from this knowledgeable group is a real honor."

Kempainen was recognized as the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Player of the Year in November. She tallied 20 points with a league-best 10 assists during her senior campaign. Three of her five goals on the season were game-winning markers. Kempainen joined former Camel central midfielder Christa Thoeresz '05 (2002) as the only Connecticut College players to garner Conference Player of the Year accolades.

Kempainen is the Camels' first women's soccer player to earn All-America honors since Connecticut College Athletic Hall of Famer Kim An Hernandez '99 was named to the team in 1998.

In the classroom, Kempainen has excelled as a Dean's Honors List Student carrying the challenging major of biology. She was recently honored as an NSCAA Scholar All-American and was named to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District Team as well as the NESCAC Fall All-Academic Team this fall.
