Women’s Tennis Stages Furious Rally to Edge East Texas Baptist, 5-4, in Thrilling Fashion

Rachel Weiss

FREDERICKSBURG, Texas – Juniors Hayley Zukerberg (Newton, Mass.) and Rachel Weiss (Great Neck, N.Y.) earned singles wins in three sets to key a comeback and propel the Connecticut College women's tennis team past East Texas Baptist, 5-4, on Monday evening.

After dropping all three doubles matches, the Camels got their first point when senior Emily Migliorini (North Haven, Conn.) earned a win at No. 1 singles by retirement. Freshman Brooke Scully (Winchester, Mass.) then cruised past Mullika Seekhieo at the No. 4 position, 6-2 and 6-0, and sophomore Paige Braithwaite (Skillman, N.J.) took down Ashley Schenck at the No. 6 spot by marks of 6-2 and 6-1 to tie the overall score at 3-3.

Tiffany Stankiewicz won No. 3 singles to put East Texas Baptist in the driver's seat and on the verge of winning, but the Camels staged another furious rally with their backs against the wall. Trailing 5-1 in a third and deciding frame at No. 2 singles, Zukerberg valiantly fought back to defeat her opponent by set scores of 6-2, 2-6, and 7-6 and pull her team even again. Weiss then clinched the victory, bettering Olivia Parmelly at No. 5 singles by scores of 7-5, 6-7 and 6-4.

Connecticut College (3-2), which has now won two straight matches, will next compete against St. Mary's (Ind.) at Rio Vista Park in San Marcos, Texas on Thursday morning at 9:00 a.m. CST (10:00 a.m. EST).
