Wesleyan University 47, Connecticut College 46 Smith Nets 13 Points for Camels

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn.--Amber Wessells (Montclair, N.J.) banked in a runner from the right side of the lane with just 1.8 seconds left to lift the Wesleyan University women's basketball team to a 47-46 victory at Connecticut College Saturday.

The Cardinals improve their record to 9-8 with a 2-5 mark in the NESCAC. The Camels, who had erased a 13 point first half deficit, slip to 7-12 with a 2-5 record in conference action.

Wessells finished with 11 points and four rebounds for the Cardinals. Senior forward Kendra Harris (St. Paul, Minn.) tallied a team-high 12 points to go with six rebounds for the visitors. Sophomore guard Dreisen Heath (New Haven, Conn.) had eight points and eight rebounds for Wesleyan.

Sophomore point guard Carlee Smith (Willimantic, Conn.) sparked the Camels on their second half rally, finishing with 13 points, six rebound and four assists. Aly Boyle (Westford, Mass.) had 10 points and three rebounds while first year forward Kayleen Murray (Litchfield, Conn.) added eight points and five boards in the setback.

Trailing 24-16 at the half, the Camels battled back to take their first lead of the second stanza when Murray buried a 17 footer from the right side with 6:20 remaining to put the hosts on top 36-35.

Heath converted two shots from the charity stripe with 5:49 to go to put the visitors back on top by a point. The Camels responded though. Caitlyn Cresencia (New Providence, N.J.) made a nifty looking feed to Boyle in the paint for a pair and then Smith knocked down a baseline 16 footer just as the shot clock was expiring with 4:35 remaining to put the Camels on top 40-37.

But Wesleyan would not go away and when Heath converted a field goal with 14 seconds left the two teams were knotted up in a tie at 45 aside. On the ensuing Camel possession with 8.2 seconds remaining, Boyle put the Camels back on top 46-45 when she made 1-of-2 from the foul line.

Wesleyan was out of timeouts so they could only sprint into their final offensive set. Wessels took the inbound pass and drove all the way down the right side for a runner that caromed high off the glass and through the cylinder with 1.8 seconds left.

The Camels did not have enough time to respond and the Cardinals celebrated with the one-point win.

The Cardinals visit Amherst College Tuesday night for a 7:00 p.m. NESCAC game. The Camels hit the road for a 7:00 p.m. NESCAC game at Hamilton College Friday night.
