PASADENA, Calif.--Robert Spencer scored his fifth goal of the match with just 27 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Connecticut College men's water polo team to a 10-9 come from behind victory at the California State Institute of Technology Sunday.
The Beavers carried a 7-4 lead into the fourth quarter. But Spencer and the Camels would not go away. With 2:54 remaining, Spencer forced the fifth tie of the game with a score that knotted things up at eight.
Moments later, with 1:32 to play, William Bogle (Weston, Mass.) found some open netting to put the Camels on top 9-8.
Cal. Tech. responded for another scoring strike with 43 seconds remaining and the Camels and Beavers were tied up at nine.
But Spencer would not be denied and with 27 seconds left, the senior tri-captain put the Camels on top for good with his fifth goal of the contest.
Spencer had two steals, two earned ejections and one assist to go with his five goals scored Sunday.
Sam Siegel-Wallace (Philadelphia, Pa.) chipped in with two goals, one assist and one steal for the winning side. Jason Robb (Winnetka, Ill.) added one goal, one blocked shot and two earned ejections for the Camels. Karan Das-Grande (Menlo Park, Calif.) registered a goal and a steal. William Bogle had one goal for the victors.
Nick DiLeo (Coopersburg, Pa.) dished out four assists and grabbed three steals to go with his three earned ejections. Paul MacMullin (Haverhill, Mass.) recorded two steals for Connecticut College.
Senior Sam Buchman (Northfield, Ill.) stopped four shots in the opening half of action. Sophomore Daniel Albers (Aloha, Ore.) made three saves in the second half for the Camels.
