Coast Guard 39, Connecticut College 35 Lovett Nets 10 Points for Camels

NEW LONDON, Conn.--The Coast Guard women's basketball team improved its record to 7-0 with a 39-35 victory against Connecticut College Tuesday.

Torie Sutherland poured in a game-high 16 points to lead the visitors in this showdown of Route 32 rivals. Meghan Fornaro and Alexi Howland both finished with seven.

Connecticut College sophomore Jenna Lovett netted a team-high 10 points to go with three rebounds for the hosts. Liz Malman added eight points and five rebounds for the Camels. Tara Gabelman finished with a game-high 11 rebounds and five points in the loss. She moved into seventh place on the program's all-time rebounding list, passing Bern Macca '95 with 639 rebounds. 

Coast Guard carried a 22-15 lead into the break. The visitors extended their advantage to 29-20 when Kaitlin Ward made a nice cut to the hoop, taking a feed from Fonaro for a deuce with 15:15 remaining.

Later on in the half, the Camels pulled to within 34-32 when Amelia King collected an offensive board and converted for some points in the paint with 8:35 left.  But Fornaro pushed the lead back to 37-32 with 3:33 remaining, netting a three-pointer for the Bears. 

Gabelman trimmed the lead to 37-34 with 1:44 remaining and clawed the Camels to within a pair when she netted one of two free throws with 14.2 seconds left. But Connecticut College could not get any closer and the visitors netted two free throws in the final nine seconds of regulation to pull out the 39-35 win.
