Box Score WATERVILLE, Maine ---(Bill Sodoma, Colby College) Willa McKinley went 9-for-11 from the field and made all four of her 3-point attempts on the way to 22 points to help Connecticut College hold on for a 72-67 NESCAC victory over Colby College on Saturday.
The game was scheduled for a 2 p.m. start, but was switched to 6 p.m. after two officials had travel problems in the poor weather in Maine on Saturday.
Connecticut College moves to 8-6 overall and 1-1 in the conference, while the Mules fall to 5-9 overall and 0-2 in the league.
McKinley did most of her damage on shots from the left side of the floor. Liz Malman added 15 points, five rebounds, and five assists for the winners. Carlee Smith chipped in with 14 points and four assists.
Colby's Desi Smith had a game-high 27 points on 7-for-11 field goal shooting and an 11-for-12 effort from the foul line. Brooke Chandor was 5-for-8 on 3-point shots for 15 points, while point guard Mia Diplock scored 11 points and dished seven assists.
The two teams traded leads and were tied six times during the opening half. With the score 27-27, the Mules went on a 9-4 scoring run in the final 3:57 to take a 36-31 lead into the half.
Colby had its biggest lead at 43-35 early in the second half, but the Camels tied the game at 46-46. With the Mules up 49-48, Malman nailed a 3-point shot with 8:25 to play to put Conn College up for good. The Camels went 8-for-8 from the foul line in the final 53 seconds to clinch the win.
Connecticut College had a 35-27 rebounding advantage and had assists on 22 of its 24 field goals. Both teams shot well from long range, with the Camels at 67 percent (8-for-12) and Colby finishing at 48 percent (11-for-23).
