Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn.—Liz Malman (Mendham, N.J.) poured in a game-high 21 points to lead the Connecticut College women's basketball team to an 82-58 victory against Clark University at Luce Field House Thursday night.
The Camels improved to 2-0 with the win while the Cougars slipped to 1-3 with the setback.
Malman was 9-for-16 from the field and a perfect 2-for-2 from the charity stripe. She added four rebounds, four steals and three assists in the victory. Senior Carlee Smith (Willimantic, Conn.), Jenna Lovett (Tolland, Conn.) and Mairead Hynes (Mahopac, N.Y.) all finished with 13 points for the winning side.
Smith added six rebounds and six assists, shooting 4-for-6 from the field. She moved into seventh place on the Camels' all-time assist leader list with 263 career helpers. Lovett finished with six rebounds, two assists and two steals while Hynes pulled down eight boards for the Camels, shooting 3-for-4 from the field and 7-for-10 from long distance.
Aimee DeArias (Sudbury, Mass.) added seven points, four rebounds and three steals in the win.
Clark University junior guard Brooke Brennan (Weston, Mass.) netted 15 points to go with six rebounds, three steals and two assists in the contest. Olivia Lyons (Belmont, Mass.) finished with 12 points and five boards.
First year players Sam O'Gara (Worcester, Mass.) and Haley Wilder (Fitzwilliam, N.H.) both contributed with nine points for Clark.
The Camels led from the opening tap and a pair of free throws from Smith with eight minutes left vaulted the hosts out to a 23-12 advantage. But the Cougars responded with a 12-to-4 run, pulling to within 27-24 when Brennan buried a three-ball from the left side of the arc with 4:12 remaining.
Connecticut College responded for the hosts with a terrific hustle play, blocking a shot to Malman that started a fast break for the Camels. Malman rewarded King for her defensive effort with an assist for an easy lay in.
Malman pushed the lead back to 10 with a jumper from the top of the key with 2:26 remaining that made it a 34-24 contest.
The Camels carried a 35-27 lead into the break.
In the second stanza, the Camels put together a 24-to-10 run that put them in complete command of the contest. Lovett opened the run with a hoop and some harm with 17:56 remaining. Smith capped the rally when she took an assist from Kaitlyn Cresencia (New Providence, N.J.) and banked one in.
The Camels were able to hold on for the convincing 82-58 victory.
