Box Score WATERVILLE, Maine --(Bill Sodoma, Colby) Trailing 48-41, Connecticut College used a 17-3 run to go ahead for good and then held on for a 62-61 win over Colby College in NESCAC women's basketball Saturday at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
Both teams are now 10-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Mairead Hynes had 13 of her team-high 18 points in the second half to help the Camels pull out the win. Liz Malman had a fine all-around game with 15 points, seven rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Jenna Lovett finished with nine points and nine rebounds, while Aimee DeArias made all three of her shots, two coming from 3-point range, for eight points.
Mia Diplock had a team-high 18 points, while Haley Driscoll was 7-for-10 from the field for 17 points to go along with seven rebounds and five assists. MaryKate Caverly finished with 11 points and three steals and Brooke Chandor had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Chandor hit a big 3-point shot with 9:23 remaining to give Colby a 48-41 lead. The Camels, though, scored 10 straight points to go up 51-48 and in total used a 17-3 run for a 58-51 margin with 4:44 to go. Willa McKinley, who had eight points and three assists, nailed a 3-point shot to get the Camels to 58.
The Mules refused to give up and ended up with a chance to win the game in the closing seconds. The Camels hurt their own cause by sending the Mules to the foul line and stopping the clock. Colby went 6-for-6 (4 from Chandor, 2 from Driscoll) to cut the lead to 60-57 with 1:27 to play.
Hynes went 1-for-2 from the free-throw line with 51 seconds left for a 61-57 margin. Driscoll scored inside with 28 seconds left to cut the lead to two points. Carlee Smith went 1-for-2 from the line with 24 seconds to play for a 62-59 lead. Driscoll again scored inside off a nice pass from Caverly with 12 seconds left to make it 62-61. The Camels missed two free throws with 11 seconds remaining to give Colby a chance for a win. The Mules were forced to call a timeout with 2.9 seconds left after some good pressure by the Camels. Colby was unable to get a final shot off before the buzzer.
The Camels had a 39-32 rebounding advantage, while the Mules shot slightly better from the field (42.9 percent to 40.7).
