Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn.--Junior Jenna Lovett (Tolland, Conn.) posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Connecticut College women's basketball team to a 74-47 triumph over Bates College at Luce Field House Saturday.
Lovett was 4-for-6 from the field and 7-for-8 at the charity stripe. She also finished with three blocks and one assist.
The Camels improved their record to 14-5 and moved to 4-2 in the NESCAC. Bates slipped to 9-10 with the setback and is still winless in conference action (0-6).
Sophomore Liz Malman (Mendham, N.J.) poured in a team-high 20 points while adding seven rebounds and three assists for the winning side. Mairead Hynes (Mahopac, N.Y.), the reigning NESCAC Player of the Week, finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds en route to a double- double of her own. Carlee Smith (Willimantic, Conn.) had 10 points and five assists in a 5-for-7 shooting performance.
The Bates Bobcats were paced by first year forward Nina Davenport (Freeport, Maine), who scored 22 of her game-high 25 points in the first half. Davenport added five rebounds in the loss and was 11-for-22 from the field. Jackie Welch (Falmouth, Maine) finished with eight points and 13 rebounds to go with five assists in the contest.
Chelsea Nason (Boxford, Mass.) added seven rebounds in the loss.
Malman vaulted the Camels out to a 30-22 advantage when she knocked down a jumper with 3:44 remaining in the first half. But Davenport answered back with the next two hoops for the Bobcats, trimming the deficit to 30-26 with a steal and bucket in transition with 2:50 to play.
With 42 seconds left, Davenport converted another field goal to provide the visitors with their first lead, 33-32.
But Willa McKinley (Westport, N.Y.) closed out the half with a basket for the Camels and the hosts carried a 34-33 advantage into the break.
Connecticut College took control in the second stanza with a lethal 25-to-0 run over 10:15 of action.
Malman converted a field goal in transition to make it a 58-37 contest with 7:14 remaining. Then, with 6:54 to go, Malman helped lead the Camels on a 2-on-1 break with a steal and dish to Smith, who banked one in to close out the torrid scoring surge and put the Camels in complete control with a 60-37 cushion.
The Camels continued to pull away for the 74-47 triumph.
Connecticut College converted at an 85% clip from the charity stripe, netting 17-of-20 shots from the foul line.
The hosts enjoyed a 45-to-36 advantage on the backboards.
Bates will resume play with a 7:00 p.m. NESCAC game at Williams College Friday.
The Camels will visit Eastern Connecticut State University for a 7:00 p.m. game Tuesday night.
