Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn.--Connecticut College is co-hosting a tournament with the Coast Guard in the Whaling City of New London this weekend.
The first night featured two terrific ball games with the local teams prevailing as the winner in both contests.
In the early contest, Connecticut College (3-2) secured an 86-79 victory against the University of Maine-Presque Isle (3-4). In the night-cap, the Coast Guard Bears (4-1) out-lasted a talented and resilient Fisher College (2-3) squad in overtime with a 92-91 victory.
Connecticut College senior co-captain Bo McKinley (Westport, N.Y.) broke the ninth tie of the game when he knocked down a pair of free throws with 4:08 remaining. McKinley buried a 16 footer from the left side with 3:22 to go to extend the Camels' advantage to 76-72. But UMPI answered when junior guard Derek Healy (Hanover, Mass.) dialed long distance from the top of the key.
Then, with 2:36 to play, junor forward Kim Collins (Oxen Hill, Md.) made a nice move and converted with a turnaround jumper to put the visitors on top 77-76. However, the Camels took the lead for good when junior Daniel Janel (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.) converted with a bucket in the post to make it a 78-77 contest with 2:06 to go. After UMPI missed its next shot, Brandon Carson (Glenmoore, Pa.) was able to collect the defensive rebound to start a fast break. Janel rewarded Carson for his efforts with a nifty looking feed to find Carson free on a back door cut to the hoop for a deuce that made it an 80-77 game.
Sean McNally (Hanover, Mass.) tacked on a clutch three-ball and the Camels were able to hold on for the 86-79 triumph.
Connecticut College freshman Tyler Rowe (East Hartford, Conn.) finished with a team-best 15 points in the victory. McNally chipped in with 14 points, converting on 3-for-5 shots from long distance. David Labossiere (Stoneham, Mass.) was 5-for-8 from the field en route to his 13 points. McKinley added 12 points and five boards, all of them coming in the second half.
"Maine-Presque Isle is a disciplined, patient offensive team and they gave us all we could handle," Connecticut College Head Men's Basketball Coach Tom Satran said. "Our team responded with some big plays down the stretch and we were fortunate to get away with the win."
Senior guard Chase Vicaire (Mattawamkeag, Maine) poured in a game-high 22 points for the Owls, connecting on 5-of-8 shots from three-point range. Kevin Collins (Oxen Hill, Md.) finished with 16 points, shooting 6-for-10 from the field. Junior forward Brandon McGill (Hamilton, N.J.) added 12 points and eight rebounds for UMPI in the setback.
In the second game, the Coast Guard built a nine-point second half advantage. But the Fisher Falcons stormed back. Junior guard Kyle Holmes (Hamden, Conn.) buried a game tying triple at the buzzer to send the game to overtime. But senior Kevin Alvarez (Key Biscayne, Fla.) scored the first six points in overtime and the Bears were able to hold on for the 92-91 triumph.
Alvarez exploded with a game-high 30 points for the Bears, shooting 10-for-20 from the field, 4-for-10 from long distance and 6-for-7 at the charity stripe. Sophomore Ethan Boose (New Philadelphia, Ohio) posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Coast Guard. Junior guard Adrian Chuquillangui (Manassas, Va.) added 13 points, three assists and a pair of steals for the winning side.
Holmes exploded with 28 points, five rebounds and four assists to lead the Falcons. Senior forward Tyler Shular (Norwalk, Conn.) chipped in with 18 points and 10 rebounds en route to a double-double. Junior forward Malik Wilson (St. Louis Park, Minn.) added 17 points and seven rebounds for Fisher.
The action resumes Sunday at the Coast Guard. Connecticut College takes on Fisher at 2:00 p.m. with the Bears from Coast Guard taking on UMPI at 4:00 p.m.
