Connecticut College 75, Coast Guard 50 Hynes Explodes with 26 Points & 13 Rebounds for Undefeated Camels (7-0)

NEW LONDON, Conn.—Sophomore Mairead Hynes (Mahopac, N.Y.) exploded with a game-high 26 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Connecticut College women's basketball team to a 75-50 victory against the Coast Guard at Luce Field House Tuesday night.

Hynes was 10-for-17 from the field and 6-for-8 at the charity stripe. She added four steals and two assists to go with her double-double.

The Camels improved their record to 7-0. It's the fastest start for the program in the NESCAC era.  The Coast Guard moved to 4-4 with the loss.

Senior captain Willa McKinley (Westport, N.Y.) chipped in with 11 points and two steals, connecting on 3-of-6 shots from long distance.  Natalia Baum (West Springfield, Mass.) finished with 10 points and four rebounds and was 4-for-5 from the field.  Rookie point guard Kylie Caouette (Ashburnham, Mass.) chipped in with nine points and five assists in 33 minutes of action.

Junior Liz Malman (Mendham, N.J.) had eight points, five rebounds and three assists. Meg Corcoran (Milton, Mass.) provided some solid defense in 11 minutes of play and had two points and three rebounds for the hosts.

Coast Guard senior Meghan Fornaro (Charlton, Mass.) finished with 20 points, connecting on 7-of-12 shots from the field and 4-for-7 shots from long distance. First year forward Micaela Martinelli of Vero Beach, Fla. reached double figures with 11 points and three rebounds, shooting 4-for-7 from the field and 3-for-5 from three-point range.

The Camels carried a 31-25 lead into the half. But in the third quarter, the Camels put together a 12-to-5 run to take control of the game. Hynes started the run with a hoop at the 9:43 mark and McKinley capped the rally with a three ball from the baseline to make it a 43-30 game with 6:40 to go in the quarter.

Hynes opened the fourth quarter with two more free throw and Baum provided instant offense, scoring all 10 of her points in the final 10 minutes of action. The Camels continued to pull away for the 75-50 victory.

Connecticut College enjoyed a 41-to-34 advantage on the backboards and induced 25 Coast Guard turnovers while only committing 15 miscues of their own.
