NESCAC Quarterfinal: #5 Colby College 75, #4 Connecticut College 66 Ouimette Nets 11 Points for Camels

NEW LONDON, Conn.—MaryKate Caverly (Point Pleasant, N.J.) poured in a game-high 23 points to lead the fifth seeded Colby College women's basketball team to a 75-66 victory against fourth seeded Connecticut College in a NESCAC quarterfinal match up played at Luce Field House Saturday.

The Mules (15-10) advance to face top seeded Tufts University in next week's semifinal round while the Camels close out their 2015-16 season with a record of 17-7.

Caverly was 8-for-13 from the field and 3-for-4 from long distance. She had four rebounds and four assists in the triumph. Mia Diplock (Vienna, Maine) scored 12 points in the fourth quarter and had four assists for the victors. Caitlin Nolan (Barrington, R.I.) and Carylanne Wolfington (Hallowell, Maine) scored 11 points each. Nolan was a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range and 2-for-2 at the charity stripe, while Wolfington finished with six rebounds for the winning side.

Sophomore center Haley Driscoll (Bedford, N.H.) hauled in a game-high 12 rebounds to go with five points and four assists in the win.

Connecticut College first year forward Payton Ouimette (Medfield, Mass.) scored a team-best 11 points to with four rebounds in the loss. Classmate Kylie Caouette (Ashburnham, Mass.) contributed with 10 points for the Camels, shooting 4-for-7 from the field and 2-for-4 from three-point distance. Meg Corcoran (Milton, Mass.) registered eight points and eight rebounds in the setback for the hosts.

In a back and forth opening quarter of play, Caverly knocked down a trey from the top of the key with 14 seconds left to put the visitors on top 16-15 after one quarter of action.  But the Camels opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run to take a six point lead on the Mules. A three-pointer from Caroline Pangallo (Fairfield, Conn.) sparked the Camels on the run with Ouimette capping the rally with back to back jumpers to put the hosts on top 22-16 with 7:18 to go.

But Colby ended the half with an 11-4 run. Desi Smith (Watertown, Wis.) buried a triple at the buzzer to put the Mules back on top by a point at the break, 38-37.

In the third quarter, the visitors found some breathing room when Driscoll and Caverly executed on a give-and go play with Caverly converting a bucket in the paint and one on the foul line to put the Mules on top 52-44 with 4:38 remaining. Later on in the third with 1:22 to go, Jenna Lovett (Tolland, Conn.) banked in a runner in the lane to trim the Colby deficit to 52-50. But Caverly ended the quarter with a lay-up and the Mules carried a 56-52 lead into the final quarter of play.

Colby took control of the contest in the fourth. Diplock knocked down a pair of three-pointers, the second one coming with 5:13 to play that vaulted the visitors out to a 65-56 advantage. The Camels pulled to within 69-62 when Corcoran tipped one in with 1:19 remaining but could not get any closer.

The Mules scored their final six points on the foul line to close out the 75-66 win.
