Men's Soccer Keeps Unbeaten and Shutout Streaks Intact With 2-0 Blanking of Eastern Connecticut State

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior Christian Murphy (Newport News, Va.) tallied a pair of assists as the Connecticut College men's soccer team triumphed over Eastern Connecticut State by a 2-0 decision on Tuesday afternoon at Freeman Field. With the victory, the Camels remained undefeated this season and extended their shutout streak to 539:33.

Connecticut College (7-0-3) dominated from start to finish and outshot its opponent by a jaw-dropping 20-3 margin. After failing to capitalize on numerous opportunities, Murphy provided a spark off the bench to get the hosts on the scoreboard. With time winding down in the first half, the junior sent in a corner kick that sophomore Manny Balbontin (New York, N.Y.) collected and headed over to junior Ben Manoogian (Peabody, Mass.) for the team's first goal of the match with just 31 seconds remaining on the clock.

The Camels, who led 1-0 at the break, kept their foot on the gas pedal throughout the second frame. The team attempted two corner kicks and had a shot that came off the foot of senior Graham Koval (Crested Butte, Colo.) bounce off the post in the opening minutes of action. In the 69th minute, junior Ben Highton (Darien, Conn.) added insurance by taking a pass from Manoogian and dribbling around an unprotected Kyle Boutot before firing on an open net. Manoogian was credited with an assist on the play which put the match out of reach.

Freshman A.J. Marcucci (West Chester, Pa.), who has played practically all of the minutes between the pipes during the shutout streak, earned his fifth clean sheet of the season by turning away two shots. Ryan Murphy of Eastern Connecticut State (5-6) was charged with the loss after making five saves in the first half.

Connecticut College will look to keep its unbeaten and shutout streaks intact when it hosts Bates on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 2:00 p.m.
