Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Sophomore Sami Ashton (Clinton, Conn.) and freshman Casey Walsh (Phoenixville, Pa.) combined to score 37 points in leading the Connecticut College women's basketball team to a 74-65 win over Skidmore on Saturday afternoon at the Williamson Center.
The Camels, who trailed 35-29 at recess, caught fire from long range in the second half by draining seven of their eight attempts from downtown. Walsh opened the scoring in the third quarter by sinking a 3-pointer before Ashton found Dana Muckstadt (Dover, Mass.) for another trifecta to spark a 10-0 run. Connecticut College regained the lead at 38-37 when Walsh converted from beyond the arc again and built its advantage up to five on two occasions.
Even though the score was tied at 46 through three quarters, the Camels continued to gain momentum which started after the break and would end the game on a 28-19 run. The team shot a blistering 9-of-13 and 69.2 percent from the field, including 4-of-4 from long range, over the last 10 minutes to come away with their first victory of the season. Junior Margaret Corcoran (Milton, Mass.) set up Ashton, who dialed up from long distance and gave the Camels a 53-52 advantage and a lead they would never relinquish the rest of the way.
Skidmore started the game strong and led by a 17-14 score after the opening period. The hosts went up by a touchdown at 21-14 on a layup by Haley English and then jumped ahead by as many as nine at 35-26 when Kelly Donnelly finished a pass from Veronica Moceri. Walsh, however, ended the half by sinking a trey to set the tone for the remainder of the contest.
Ashton filled the stat sheet by scoring 20 points, grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out five assists to lead the way for Connecticut College. Walsh exploded to net 17 in just her second game as a collegian, earning all-tournament laurels for her efforts, and also shot a perfect 6-of-6 from the field as well as 5-of-5 from beyond the arc. Sophomore Nancy Coulverson (South Ozone Park, N.Y.) was a spark off the bench with eight points on 4-of-5 shooting, and senior Mairead Hynes (Mahopac, N.Y.) netted 13.
Donnelly paced Skidmore (0-2), which won the Liberty League regular season title last year, with a game-high 20 points. She also added five rebounds, five steals and two blocked shots while also landing on the all-tournament squad. English contributed 11 points, four assists and four boards.
