Women's Basketball Knocks Off Perennial NEWMAC Leader Babson, 73-62, on the Road

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Freshman Casey Walsh (Phoenixville, Pa.) scored 17 points and senior Mairead Hynes (Mahopac, N.Y.) came just shy of recording a double-double as the Connecticut College women's basketball team defeated Babson by a 73-62 score on Sunday afternoon at Staake Gymnasium.

Connecticut College (3-1), which has already faced three opponents that competed in last year's NCAA Tournament, led for nearly the entire opening quarter. Walsh hit a jumper at the 8:46 mark to get the team going before giving the Camels a five-point lead at 11-6 by finishing a pass from junior Kylie Caouette (Ashburnham, Mass.) near the midway point. Babson took its first lead when Nicole Hiller nailed a 3-pointer to make it 17-16 with 1:32 on the clock, but the Camels closed out the quarter on a 7-0 run with sophomore Nancy Coulverson (South Ozone Park, N.Y.) providing most of the scoring.

Leading 23-17 through 10 minutes of play, the visitors stayed ahead for most of the second quarter. Even though the Beavers took a 26-25 advantage on a Brenna Legacy layup, the Camels quickly recovered and got another trifecta from Walsh. Coulverson added four more points down the stretch, including her third free throw of the contest, and Connecticut College clinged to a 36-35 lead at the recess.

Connecticut College continued to hold a narrow lead in the third quarter before pulling away in the final frame. The Beavers temporarily went ahead by scores of 38-36 and 40-38 shortly after the break. However, their leads were temporary like they were in the first half.

The Camels ended the third quarter ahead by a 51-47 score, as Walsh closed out the scoring for the team by sinking a jumper with 2:01 on the clock, and sophomore Dana Muckstadt (Dover, Mass.) set the tone for the fourth by finishing a pass from junior Caroline Pangallo (Fairfield, Conn.). Caouette then gave the Camels their first double-digit lead at 67-56 by converting a layup and followed up by canning a trey the next time down the floor to put the game out of reach.

Hynes came just short of a double-double by contributing 16 points and nine rebounds to lead the way for Connecticut College. She also blocked three shots. Walsh added a game-high 17 points to go along with four boards and two steals, while Coulverson corralled seven rebounds and also netted double figures by chipping in 11.

Babson (2-1), which advanced to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament last year, was paced by Tea Spellcey. The junior finished with 14 points, five rebounds and four steals. Katherine Tamulionis and Emily Bonifacic scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, and Payton Ouimette ended the game with nine points and a game-high 11 boards.

Connecticut College will look to win its fourth straight game when it returns home to host Worcester State on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m.
