Women's Basketball Beats Hamilton, 72-54, in NESCAC Action

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior Margaret Corcoran (Milton, Mass.) came just shy of recording a double-double to help lead the Connecticut College women's basketball team to a convincing 72-54 victory over Hamilton in NESCAC action at the Charles B. Luce Field House on Saturday afternoon.

Hamilton appeared to begin pulling away during a tight first quarter when a Marie Steiner 3-pointer made it 14-9 in favor of the Continentals with 2:04 left to play. The Camels, however, ended the frame on a 7-0 run and most notably got a trifecta from junior Kylie Caouette (Ashburnham, Mass.) off a pass from classmate Caroline Pangallo (Fairfield, Conn.) to take a 16-14 lead heading into the second frame.

After the Continentals once again put together a string of baskets together to go ahead by five, Connecticut College struck right back with another strong finish down the stretch. The Camels ended the half on a 15-2 run by getting points from four different players to take a 31-23 advantage at recess.

The second half belonged to the hosts, as sophomore Sami Ashton gave her team its first double-digit lead of the day at 36-26 when she drove in for a layup and got herself to the free throw line. The point guard then added two more field goals to extend the lead to 13 on a pair of occasions, which was capped by making a layup in the final seconds to create a 48-35 score through three periods of play.

In the fourth quarter, the Camels continued to get stronger and ballooned the margin up to 22 at 60-38 when Pangallo put together a 3-point play the old-fashioned way with just 6:10 remaining in the game. The hosts never let the Continentals get closer than 16 points and would run away with their second NESCAC victory of the season.

Corcoran contributed 16 points and eight rebounds to lead the way for Connecticut College. Caouette added 17 points in a reserve role, while Ashton finished with 11 points along with four assists. Sophomore Nancy Coulverson (Queens, N.Y.) redirected a career-best three shots for the second straight game.

Hamilton (11-4, NESCAC 1-2) was paced by Halie Serbent in the losing effort. She scored 17 points and pulled down four rebounds. Steiner notched 13 points off the bench.

Connecticut College (10-4, NESCAC 2-2) will continue its current four-game homestand when it hosts Arcadia for a non-conference matchup on Monday at noon.
