Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior Margaret Corcoran (Milton, Mass.) scored a career-high 17 points and sophomore Sami Ashton (Clinton, Conn.) dished out a career-best nine assists to help lead the Connecticut College women's basketball team to a 72-59 non-conference win over Arcadia on Monday afternoon at the Charles B. Luce Field House.
After both teams struggled with shooting from the floor over the first five minutes, Arcadia (7-9) embarked on a 15-7 run to take a six-point lead at 17-11 with 1:38 on the clock by having field different players convert a field goal. Corcoran, however, caught fire and scored nine of the next 11 points for the Camels between the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second to shift the momentum.
With the hosts trailing 22-19, junior Kylie Caouette (Ashburnham, Mass.) factored into three straight 3-point field goals by setting up Corcoran, finishing a pass from sophomore Ashley Howe (Saco, Maine) and then feeding Howe for another basket from long range to give her team a 28-25 advantage and the lead for good. Caouette then put back a missed 3-pointer with just over a minute remaining in the second, and the Camels carried a 37-30 lead into the break.
Connecticut College (11-4) came out with a vengeance in the second half and scored nine consecutive points to begin pulling away. Howe scored five straight points and then found freshman Casey Walsh (Phoenixville, Pa.) for a jumper to make it 46-30 with 6:17 remaining in the third quarter.
The Knights made an attempt to rally and closed the gap to single digits when Kylie Fischer drove in for a layup to create a 51-42 score. Sophomore Dana Muckstadt (Dover, Mass.), however, drew a foul and made to free throws on the Camels' next possession to put the hosts ahead by twin figures the rest of the way. Caouette and Muckstadt each converted layups to balloon the margin to 19 on two occasions in the fourth quarter to provide more than enough insurance for the hosts to run away with the win.
Corcoran netted a career-best 17 points by shooting 7-of-12 from the floor, including 4-of-6 from long range, and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the way for Connecticut College. Ashton registered six points, three rebounds, two steals and one block in addition to notching a career-high nine helpers. Howe matched her career scoring mark with 14 points, while Caouette was impressive off the bench again with 18 points and five steals.
Fischer paced three Arcadia players in twin figures with 15 points off the bench. Taylor Fritz and Haley Still finished with 11 points apiece, and Taylor Dunn had a solid all-around performance by scoring seven points, pulling down four rebounds and recording three steals.
