Women's Basketball Knocks Off Bates With Red-Hot Shooting

LEWISTON, Maine – Junior Margaret Corcoran (Milton, Mass.) registered a double-double to help lead the Connecticut College women's basketball team to a convincing 71-54 road victory over Bates at Alumni Gym on Saturday afternoon. The Camels shot a remarkable 56.1 percent from the floor to win their third NESCAC game of the season and stay in the playoff race.

Both teams shot over 60 percent from the field in the opening quarter which would end with the Bobcats clinging to a 25-22 lead. Connecticut College, however, only allowed the hosts to score five points over the next 10 minutes to begin seizing control. After senior Mairead Hynes (Mahopac, N.Y.) finished a pass from junior Caroline Pangallo (Fairfield, Conn.) to put the Camels ahead, freshman Casey Walsh (Phoenixville, Pa.) scored six straight points to help the visitors take a 36-30 lead heading into the break.

Connecticut College then pulled away in the third quarter and never looked back by embarking on a 16-2 run over. Hynes led the Camels by providing five points and three assists during the six-minute stretch to help her team push ahead by a 56-40 score through three quarters of play. Corcoran ballooned the margin to as many as 20 at 71-51 by putting back her own missed shot, and the Camels ran away with the 17-point win.

Corcoran tallied 15 points and a career-high 12 rebounds to lead the way for Connecticut College. Hynes contributed 19 points to go along with six assists, while junior Kylie Caouette (Ashburnham, Mass.) scored 15 points by sinking four shots from downtown.

Bates (7-14, NESCAC 1-6) was paced by Nina Davenport's 15-point, nine-rebound effort. Julia Middlebrook notched 17 points to go along with six assists and four steals.

Connecticut College (12-6, NESCAC 3-4) returns home to host Eastern Connecticut State on Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m.
