Box Score MEDFORD, Mass. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team dropped an 85-48 decision to No. 12 Tufts in a NESCAC quarterfinal matchup on Saturday afternoon at Cousens Gym.
Tufts (22-3) never trailed in the contest and jumped out to a 13-6 advantage thanks to lights out shooting. The Jumbos converted their first six field goals before Emily Briggs finally missed from downtown with 6:27 on the clock. Connecticut College needed to take a timeout with 3:14 remaining when it dropped into an early 20-8 hole and then played the Jumbos more evenly for the rest of the frame.
The Camels, who trailed 26-13 at the end of the first quarter, tried to slice the deficit back to single digits on multiple occasions. Senior Mairead Hynes (Mahopac, N.Y.) finished two passes from Caroline Pangallo (Fairfield, Conn.) to make it 35-25 with 1:48 remaining as well as 37-27 in the final seconds. The visitors, however, could not get any closer the rest of the way.
Tufts seized control and ran away by outscoring the Camels by a 26-11 margin in the third quarter. Lauren Dillon nailed a 3-pointer to get the Jumbos going, and Erica DeCandido and Melissa Baptista followed with buckets to suddenly create a 48-30 score. The hosts ballooned their lead up to 38 points before coming away with the convincing win.
Baptista scored a game-high 21 points to lead the way for Tufts, which advances to face Bowdoin in the semifinal round next weekend. Jac Knapp added 15 points, and Dillon ended the game with 13 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and a blocked shot.
Hynes was a bright spot for Connecticut College by notching her second straight double-double in her final game as a collegian. She contributed 20 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Casey Walsh (Phoenixville, Pa.) also reached twin figures with 10 points, while Pangallo finished with four assists.
Connecticut College (15-9) graduates one senior and is slated to return 12 letterwinners next season.
