Trinity Nips Women's Basketball

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team dropped a 52-50 decision to Trinity on Sunday afternoon at Oosting Gymnasium.

Connecticut College led 40-36 through 30 minutes of action by getting a 3-pointer from sophomore Sami Ashton (Clinton, Conn.) in the waning seconds of the third quarter. The Camels also found themselves ahead in the waning minutes when senior Mairead Hynes (Mahopac, N.Y.) broke a 43-all tie, but the Bantams rallied and jumped ahead by five points after Erin Cunningham converted a layup and drilled a 3-pointer on consecutive possessions.

The Camels attempted to chip away at the deficit in the late staged and came within one when Ashton found Hynes to create a 49-48 score with 1:12 on the clock. Trinity, however, stole the ball away from the visitors three times in the final minute and shot 3-of-4 from the charity stripe to hang on for the win.

The opening half was a tale of two quarters. The Camels burst ahead by a 7-0 score, as junior Kylie Caouette (Ashburnham, Mass.) found Hynes for a layup before canning a 3-pointer as well as a layup in the opening minutes. Connecticut College led by a 17-7 margin at the end of the first quarter, but Trinity stormed back in the second by embarking on a 12-0 run to seize the lead. Five different players converted a field goal during the run to put the Bantams ahead. Caouette nailed a shot from downtown to give the Camels a 24-23 edge, but the hosts answered with two 3-pointers at the other end to take a 29-26 advantage into the break.

Trinity (14-8, NESCAC 2-6) was led by Peace Kabari, who filled the scoresheet with seven points, seven rebounds, seven assists and six steals. Meghan Lewis and Cunningham added 11 points apiece.

Hynes scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the way for Connecticut College. Caouette also reached twin figures with 10 points, while junior Caroline Pangallo (Fairfield, Conn.) contributed eight points and four assists off the bench.

Connecticut College (13-7, NESCAC 3-5) will return home to face nationally-ranked Bowdoin with postseason implications on the line on Friday, Feb. 9 at 7:00 p.m.
