Roger Williams Rallies Past Men's Basketball in Second Half

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's basketball team dropped a non-conference game to Roger Williams by a 75-60 score on Wednesday evening at the Charles B. Luce Field House.

For the second straight game, Connecticut College got off to a hot start. The hosts made their first four shots to take an 8-4 advantage on a layup by junior Jeff Allen (Madison, Conn.) and extended their lead to as many as 11 when freshman Ben McPherron (Weston, Mass.) finished a pass from Jack Zimmerman (Bedford, N.H.) and converted from long range.

But after the Camels built up a 26-15 advantage at the 4:58 mark on the McPherron trifecta, Roger Williams began chipping away at the deficit and slashed it down to one when Rich Pugliese dialed up from long distance. The Hawks only trailed 30-29 at the break.

Roger Williams (3-1) set the tone for the second half by scoring the first basket on the opening possession and never trailed again. They opened the frame on a 9-0 run and took a double-digit lead for the first time when JJ Pfohl drove in for a layup to make it 50-40 with 10:49 left. The Camels brought the margin down to seven on a good free throw by sophomore Ryan Omslaer (Jackson, N.J.), but the Hawks responded by ending the game on a 14-6 run. Pugliese closed out the scoring with an old-fashioned 3-point play.

Pfohl paced Roger Williams by contributing 18 points, four assists, and four steals. Pugliese netted 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Eli Harris finished with 16 points.

Sophomore Matt Carlin (Syracuse, N.Y.) and Zimmerman led Connecticut College in scoring with nine points apiece. Carlin also added three steals and two assists. The Camel bench contributed 32 of the 60 points, which included Carlin's nine plus an additional eight from senior Patrick Lazor (West Hartford, Conn.). Junior Daniel Draffan (Hamden, Conn.) grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.

Connecticut College (1-2) will travel for the first time this season when it visits Clark for a non-conference game on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
