Roger Williams Escapes With 62-58 Win Over Women's Basketball

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – Despite getting a career-best performance from sophomore Claire Gulbin (Wilton, Conn.), the Connecticut College women's basketball team dropped a non-conference game to Roger Williams by a 62-58 decision on Thursday evening.

Connecticut College (2-2) seized back a 52-50 lead when Gulbin drained a trifecta with just over two minutes left. However, Gabby Jerahian answered on the Hawks' next possession with a 3-pointer of her own to put the hosts ahead by one before Sam Leone sank a pair of free throws to make it a three-point game.

Following a Camel timeout with 1:08 remaining and needing a three to tie, sophomore point guard Audrey Shaev (Scarsdale, N.Y.) drove down the right side of the lane and attempted to kick the ball out to Gulbin in the left corner. Jerahian, however, came through again by intercepting the pass, and the Hawks added two more points at the charity stripe to begin pulling away with a 57-52 advantage and just 42 seconds on the clock.

The Camels did not give up and were able to come within one at 59-58 by getting back-to-back threes from Gulbin, but they were unable to get over the hump. The Hawks hit three free throws down the stretch, and the visitors were unable to convert at the other end.

The beginning of the game was a seesaw battle between the teams. But after Connecticut College took a 12-6 lead with 2:46 left in the first on a layup by sophomore Jenna Whelan (Bernardsville, N.J.), the Hawks stormed ahead by rattling off 13 unanswered points during the second quarter and six from the charity stripe.

After getting outscored by a 17-8 margin in the second quarter, the Camels chipped away at the deficit during the third and created a single-possession game when Gulbin made a layup to close the gap to 42-39 through 30 minutes of action. Even though the Camels completed a rally by moving ahead in the fourth, they were unable to hold on and had to settle for their second straight non-conference setback.

Karli Opalka led Roger Williams (3-2) with a double-double by recording 13 points and 10 rebounds. Sam Leone also scored 13 points while providing six boards, four assists, and three steals.

Gulbin had a career evening by racking up 25 points in 27 minutes off the bench for Connecticut College. Seniors Dana Muckstadt (Dover, Mass.) and Nancy Coulverson (Queens, N.Y.) corralled seven boards apiece.

Connecticut College (2-2) will next host FDU-Florham for its home opener on Tuesday afternoon at 5 p.m.
