No. 18 Men's Soccer Runs Past Bates, 1-0, in Battle Between Unbeaten Programs

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore Steve Yeonas (McLean, Va.) headed home the second goal of his career to help propel the No. 18 Connecticut College men's soccer program to a 1-0 triumph over Bates in a battle between two unbeaten programs on Saturday afternoon at Freeman Field.

In a tight match that only featured 13 combined shots attempted between the two programs, Connecticut College got the deciding marker in the late stages of the first half. Senior captain Freddy Stokes (Westhampton, Mass.) threw the ball dangerously into the six-yard box, and Yeonas was able to hammer a header to the left corner of the net after a Bates defender unsuccessfully tried to clear it in the 42nd minute.

Junior All-American AJ Marcucci (West Chester, Pa.) picked up the shutout victory by making five saves between the pipes for the Camels, who found a way to win despite being outshot by an 8-5 margin and only attempting one corner kick over the entire 90 minutes. David Goodstein made two saves for Bates (3-1, NESCAC 1-1) in the losing effort.

Connecticut College (4-0, NESCAC 2-0) will remain at home to face Trinity on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
