AMHERST, Mass. – The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team was upended by Amherst, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Orr Rink.

With the game deadlocked at 1-1 in the final minute, sophomore Stephanie Nomicos provided the heroics for the Mammoths by stopping a feed from the middle of the ice and inside the blue line and wristing a shot through traffic. Kate Pohl and Carley Daly were credited with assists on the play.

Amherst (7-3-2, NESCAC 3-2-1) took a 1-0 lead at the 4:24 mark of the opening period, as Kaitlin Hoang intercepted the puck on a clear attempt along the board and fired to the top corner of the net. But following a scoreless second that saw both sides earn several scoring opportunities, which included a breakaway for Camel junior Erin Dillon (Hazlet, N.J.) that was thwarted by a Mammoth defender, the visitors were able to capitalize in the fourth minute of the final period courtesy of the team's top scorer. Dillon capitalized just 11 seconds into a power play by one-timing a dish from senior Lauren Helm (Frisco, Texas).

The Camels, however, were only able to fire away two more shots on target the rest of the way. Caitlin Walker turned away two additional scoring opportunities before Nomicos' strike with just 19.3 seconds remaining in regulation would prove to be the difference.

Walker earned the win for Amherst between the pipes by making 14 saves. Sophomore Carly Denora (Verona, N.J.) suffered the setback by also turning away 14 shots at the other end.

Connecticut College (7-5, NESCAC 2-4) returns home to face Suffolk on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.
