Women's Basketball's Late Comeback Bid Comes Up Just Short Versus Wheaton

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team came up just short against Wheaton by a 67-62 score in a non-conference game on Tuesday evening at the Charles B. Luce Field House.

Connecticut College held a slight 34-30 advantage at halftime before Wheaton recovered by outscoring the hosts, 21-11, in the third frame. Mikayla Pucci converted an old-fashioned 3-point play to extend the lead to 11 at 58-47 in the fourth period and then blocked a shot at the other end, but the Camels did not give up and chipped away at the deficit.

With her team trailing by a 60-50 score and less than six minutes to go, senior Sami Ashton (Clinton, Conn.) ignited a 10-2 run down the stretch by driving in for a layup to put the Camels back within single digits. The captain also hit two free throws and stole the ball on back-to-back plays before finishing with a pair of layups on fast breaks to slash the margin down to just two points and create a one-possession game at 62-60 with 2:23 left.

Unfortunately, another steal leading to a fast break opportunity was whistled off due to a traveling call, and the Lyons' Bri Forbes finished with a layup on the following play to kill the momentum. Wheaton did not allow the Camels to convert a field goal the rest of the way, and a pair of free throws by Sadie Shore in the waning seconds put the game on ice.

Shore led Wheaton (5-8) to victory with 22 points, eight rebounds, and three blocked shots. Pucci and Forbes finished with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Ashton paced Connecticut College with 22 points and six steals in the setback. Senior Dana Muckstadt (Dover, Mass.) grabbed eight rebounds and was among four Camel players to dish out two assists.

Connecticut College (5-8) resumes NESCAC play when it hosts Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.
